Features that Distinguishes Our Department from Equivalent Departments

Our department is the first institution in which geography courses started in Turkish universities in 1863. The Department of Geography strengthened after 1915, and it was the first department to be opened in Istanbul University, which was established as the first university in Turkey with the University Reform in 1933. The Department of Geography is a "resource" in terms of training faculty members for other universities in Turkey, especially in the early development stages, and it still maintains this feature. In addition to the fact that the studies of our academics in many regions, departments, and regions of the country constitute an important data/information source for the projects to be applied in the development of these areas, their ties with International Geography institutions and scientists and their approach that cares about interdisciplinary cooperation also make our department different. Other features that make our department different are that the 'International Geography Congress', which is held every four years within the body of the International Geography Union, will be held for the first time in our country in 2021 with the contributions of our department at the Faculty of Letters and that the first Turkish Geographer elected as the Vice President of the International Geography Union is from our department. Our department teaches our students to access information in the field of geography, to do resource research, to share their knowledge and experience with competent people, to defend opposing views, to process and execute these data using different analyses, methods and techniques by making social data analysis, to monitor developments in science and technology, by constantly renewing itself, it gains the competence to have a lifelong learning awareness. Our students gain responsibility for environmental protection, occupational health and safety, social justice, the universality of social rights, quality and cultural values in universal and social dimensions with practices in their field.

Business areas that our graduates can work and be involve

Our graduates from our department have worked with Mineral Research and Exploration Institute, Rural Services, General Directorate of Forestry, General Directorate of Highways, Meteorology Affairs, State Institute of Statistics, State Planning Organization, etc. They can work in official institutions such as the Ministry of Tourism and the Ministry of Environment. Our graduates have the opportunity to work in regional planning studies and in the units where the planning activities of the municipalities take place. In addition, the Geography professional recognition studies carried out before the Vocational Qualifications Authority of our department and the creation of the Geography Core Program carried out within the YÖK provide important contributions.

Brief Information of our Department

During the westernization process of the Ottoman State, the idea of establishing a university (Darülfünun) was first introduced in 1845 by the Provisional Education Council. The council was aiming to found a university mainly concentrating on the betterment of the human virtues (ikmâl-i kemâlât-ı insâniye) instead of vocational education. In the second half of the 19th century, Darülfünun became the center of various initiatives to inform the public about various scientific subjects until it transitioned to continuous and institutional education in 1900. At its initial stages, courses on General History, History of Science, Antiquities, and Numismatics were offered. Darülfünun, which was founded in 1900, continued its education without interruption. Initially, the number of students was limited, and the enrollments were managed with a centralized approach. However, as time passed, Darülfünun started to turn into a new and developing university. In this period, history courses were dominant in the curriculum of the Literature branch, which was one of the three faculties called ""branches"" without departmental divisions. The courses of Ottoman History, History of States, Antiquities, and Ethnography were being taught by the intellectuals of the period, such as Abdurrahman Şeref Efendi and Efdalüddin. The first course offered in Darülfünün was ""Tarih-i Hikmet"". The faculty councils, which started their activities in the Second Constitutional Era, were primarily active in curriculum formation. There were names such as Hüseyin Daniş, Mehmet Akif, Ahmet Naim, Ahmet Mithat Efendi, Efdalüddin, Ahmet Hikmet, and Hamdullah Suphi in the committee responsible for the literature branch program's preparation. According to the reform report of the committee, the History-Geography section, which forms the basis of the History Department, was expressed for the first time. The reform program, which included General History, Recent History, History of Civilisations, Byzantine History, History of Islamic States, Ottoman History, Archaeology, Ethnography, Methods of History, Arabic and French, was very rich content. However, this program could not be implemented for economic and political reasons. The members of the Faculty of Letters have an outstanding contribution to the establishment of an autonomous university structure. The Department of History has been formed to a great extent with the new arrangement made in 1919, and we see that the Department of History has been well-formed. The curriculum of the faculty, which was named ""Medrese,"" included courses such as Political History, Turkish History, History of Islamic Nations, History of Turkey, History of European-Turkish Relations, History of Oriental Nations in the Middle Ages, History of Ancient Oriental Nations, Ancient Greek History and Roman History. Many faculty members were excluded from the History Department for various reasons, as in other departments of the Faculty of Letters, which had a hard time in the armistice years. Although the academic staff has weakened due to the academics who have gone to Anatolia to support the National Struggle, young faculty members have closed this gap quickly. Professors such as Ahmet Refik, Şemseddin Günaltay, Abdurrahman Şeref Efendi, Ağaoğlu Ahmet, and Yusuf Akçura from the Department of History have supported many projects which were going to serve Turkish culture by taking an active role in the culture and education policies of the new state. In this sense, students who have graduated from the first History Department of Turkey had formed the basis of many newly established universities. Since the establishment of the History Department, the students have continued to research various issues of World History, especially Turkish History, following the scientific methods. Many graduates of the History Department have served and continue to serve in various Republic of Turkey's administration positions.

Brief Information Regarding the Scientific Works and Research Activities

The Department of History, which preserved its existence as a department after the 1933 University Reform, was referred to as History Discipline. In the following years, the system of an inspired era from Europe was adopted. As from 1946, the ""department system"", which has the feature of a discipline, has been enforced within the department. As a result of the arrangements made in the last period, today, the Department of History includes seven departments: Ancient History, Medieval History, New Age History, Contemporary Age History, General Turkish History, History of Turkish Republic, and the History of Ottoman Institutions and Civilization. The Department of Ancient History: Its research area covers topics from the oldest ages to the present. Some of the lectures are given with the support of ""PowerPoint / Barcovision"". The courses titled ""the Introduction of Ancient History"", ""Ancient Anatolian History"", ""Ancient Mesopotamian History"", ""History of Ancient Egypt"", ""History of Ancient Persia"", ""History of Hellenism"", ""History of Roman Empire"", and ""Ancient Anatolian Coins"" are among the courses taught by this department. Some of them are also supported by seminars. In addition, students can participate in museums, archaeological surface research, and excavations, which faculty members carry out during the summer months, to enrich their theoretical knowledge on an applied or observational basis. The Department of Medieval History: After the University Reform of 1933, medieval history courses were given by Distinguished Professor Şemseddin Günaltay, Distinguished Professor İ. Hakkı Uzunçarşılı and Distinguished Professor Mükrimin Halil Yınanç. After 1946, lectures became a separate department. The main topics of the Department of Medieval History courses and seminars are Islamic History, History of Seljuks, Anatolian and Byzantine History, History of Crusades, and History of Western States. The Department of New Age History: Issues regarding the foundation of the Ottoman Empire, the rise and development of classical Ottoman institutions, European history during the Renaissance and Reform Era, and early modern Mediterranean history are the main subjects examined by the Department of Modern History. The Department of Contemporary Age History: It is possible to review the activities of the Department of Contemporary History in three critical periods since its establishment. The first period includes the activities of this department, starting under the title of New and Recent History Department after the 1933 University Reform and becoming a separate department in 1952. In the second period, the department became a separate certificate in 1952, leaving its structuring, which had been together with the Modern History certificate. This period continued until 1982 when the program was restructured under the Department of Contemporary and Turkish Republican History with the Council of Higher Education (YÖK). Finally, the third period is the process that has been continuing since 1982. The Department of the History of the Turkish Republic: By enacting the Law of Higher Education within the Constitution of 1982, departments of the History of the Turkish Republic were established and started their activities in all universities. Initially, the Department of the History of the Turkish Republic, which late Professor Nejat Göyünç established within our department, provided training with the Department of Contemporary History. With the consensus of the faculty members at the end of 1989, the Department of Contemporary History and the Department of the History of the Turkish Republic became two separate departments. In this program, the War of Independence, the establishment of the Republic, educational and economic policies of the Republican period, the system of Kemalist Taught, History of Turkish Democracy, and Turkey's Foreign Policy are being researched with scientific methods and lectures are given on these topics. While approaching the Republic established by the Great Leader Atatürk, his thoughts regarding the Turkish world and his efforts in democratization have been the subject of studies and lectures. For the first time in Turkish universities, History of Turkish Democracy started to be given as a lecture in our department. In our department, three separate courses regarding the History of Central Asian Turkish History and Culture, which was considered as a source in researching Turkish history and culture by Atatürk, have been opened, and extensive scientific research has been done in this field. Lectures titled ""Atatürk and Foreign Turks"", ""Turkey and New Turkish Republics"" and ""Movements of Taught in Turkish World"" have been included in the curriculum of the program since its establishment. Research made regarding the Turkish world and lectures on this topic in this department served as an example. Today, these programs have been implemented in history departments of more than ten universities. The Department of General Turkish History: The Department of General Turkish History is a department that undertakes essential tasks in Turkish history, culture, and civilization. Our department is a program that undertakes the workload of the Department of History on a large scale by its research fields. In this department which Professor A.Z. Velidi Togan founded, Turkish states established since the ages before Christ, Turkish communities and their organizations, social lives, political activities, military structure, economic activities, religious beliefs, geographies they lived in, migrations, and their relations with their neighbors are emphasized. Studies are also carried out on Turks, who maintained their existence today outside of Anatolian geography, Eastern Europe, Balkans, and Turkistan. The Department of the History of Ottoman Institutions and Civilization: The need for a separate department to examine the institutions and cultural structure of a state that had an important place in the political, administrative, economic, and cultural history of the world like Ottomans and was in interaction with other states in these fields, is obvious. For the first time in Turkey, Istanbul University, the oldest university of the Republic of Turkey, recognized this scientific need and established the Department of the History of Ottoman Institutions and Civilization in the Faculty of Letters, Department of History on 14 December 1961. Professor Tayyib Gökbilgin, who was the department's founder, made efforts for the formation and development of the department until 1977. From this date forward, Professor Mübahat Kütükoğlu, who took over the department chair, made great efforts for twenty-one years to sustain the department by continuing academic activities and training new academics.

Both the courses taught and the studies carried out in the department, and the undergraduate and graduate theses have been prepared using archive materials and first-hand sources. Issues related to the foundation date of the Ottoman Empire, the emergence and root of the classical Ottoman institutions, the Renaissance and the Reform period, European history, the history of the early modern Mediterranean, are studied by faculty members of the Department of New Age History and students are offered courses and seminars on these topics.
