Brief Information of our Department

The Department of Sociology was established by great sociologist and ideologist Ziya Gökalp in 1914. It was the first Sociology Chair in Turkey and the second in Europe after Durkheim’s Sorbonne. Hence, the Department of Sociology has been hosted significant figures of the history of Turkish sociology, namely Ziya Gökalp, Mehmet İzzet, Hilmi Ziya, Nurettin Şazi Kösemihal, Baykan Sezer, and so on. Relying on its historical tradition, the Department of Sociology seeks to encompass the current developments in sociological thought throughout the World. The department attempts to link past with future, history with philosophy, economics with politics.

Brief Information Regarding the Scientific Works and Research Activities

The Department of Sociology embraces the legacies of both Turkish and world sociological thought. Relying on these legacies Department of Sociology provides a horizon, which links past with future, history with philosophy, economics with politics. The department's curriculum includes urban issues, social change, social and economic inequalities, sociology of communication, critical literary and cultural studies, sociology of religion, current debates on social issues, and innovations. By doing so, the Department of Sociology enhances its students' understanding of society and equips them with relevant methodological and technical tools.

The Department of Sociology provides its students a good mixture of theoretical, methodological, and field studies. It aims to enhance its student with the understanding of which theoretical approach is relevant, how, and where to apply it. Department of Sociology welcomes 80 undergraduate students each year as well as over 40 graduate students. For undergraduate studies, students must have a valid YKS Equal Weight score. Department of Sociology is accredited by FEDEK and a proud member of the International Sociological Association and European Sociological Association.

How to apply Double Major and Minor Programs?

The Department of Sociology provides its students the opportunity to apply for Double Major and Minor programs. - Students can apply for a Double Major in their third semester (earliest) or fifth semester (latest). - To apply for a Double Major, students must succeed in all the courses taken, and the GPAs should be at least 3.00 out of 4.00. Students must also be within the top 20% of their major programs. - Students can apply for a Minor in their third semester (earliest) or sixth semester (latest). - To apply for a Minor, students’ GPAs should be at least 2.50 out of 4.00. Those who graduated from their majors may have two extra semesters to finish their Double Major or Minor programs.

Department's Student Club

Our department hosts four student clubs: Sociology Club, City and Society Club, Ecology Club, Intercultural Interaction Club. - The Sociology Club organizes activities for the Department of Sociology students to enhance their knowledge and experiences. In addition, the club seeks to prepare its members for life after graduation. In order to do so, it organizes workshops, conferences, panels, voluntary activities. - City and Society Club seeks to enhance the student of the Faculty of Letters with their knowledge and perception of the city they have been living in. To do so, the club organizes various activities, including workshops, conferences, and tours. - Ecology Club aims to develop awareness towards ecological problems and organize several activities, including voluntary services, conferences, and workshops. - Intercultural Interaction Club seeks to create a milieu in which different cultures find a way to express themselves and harmoniously interact with each other. To do so, it organizes activities including workshops, conferences, tours, etc.

Graduate Education

Our department offers Master's and Doctorate programs and M.A. programs for Urban Studies, Migrations Studies, and Political Sociology. It also provides an M.A. Non-Thesis Program for NGOs and Social Responsibility Management. - Applications for Master's programs require a minimum of 65 ALES or equivalent exam scores, a minimum of 50 YDS, or an equivalent language exam score. The maximum duration of study for Master's programs is six semesters. - Applications for Doctorate programs require a minimum of 65 ALES or equivalent exam scores, a minimum of 55 YDS, or equivalent language exam scores. The maximum duration of study for Doctorate programs is 12 semesters. - NGOs and Social Responsibility Management M.A. Non-Thesis Program does not require any exam scores.

Exchange Programs

Our department offers its students Erasmus+, Farabi, and Mevlana exchange programs. - Erasmus program applications require a minimum 2.20 GPA for undergraduate students and a 2.50 GPA for graduate students. 50% of GPA and 50% of language exam scores determine the rankings of applicants. A scholarship is provided for top rankings. - Farabi program enables students to study in another Turkish university for a maximum of two semesters. Thus, each year four students of the Department of Sociology visit another university via the Farabi program. - Mevlana program is a bilateral agreement between a local university and a foreign university. Mevlana program is not restricted geographically so that students may visit any university around the world.

Journals (published by Department)

The Department of Sociology publishes a refereed journal titled Istanbul University Journal of Sociology. The journal has held an important place in the development of sociology as a scientific discipline in Turkey. First published in 1917, Istanbul University Journal of Sociology was the first sociology journal written in Turkish. In its roughly 100-year history, the journal has become the pioneering and prominent publication within the discipline. It is also an open-access, double-blind refereed, international journal focusing on the publication of research and studies covering all aspects of the social. The journal aims to aid and facilitate international and interdisciplinary scientific communication, strengthen the links between scientific research and society in Turkey, and stimulate and enhance the quality of debate. Representing an interdisciplinary forum for the exchange of recent data and expert opinions reflects the importance of a comprehensive approach to resolving the social problems in Turkey. There is also a forthcoming journal titled Turkish Journal of Urban Studies.

Our graduates can work in public or private institutions such as mass media, political research centers, advertisements, social work, human resources departments, public relations, etc., as well as academia.

Admission Requirements to Undergraduate Programs for International Students

International students or Turkish students who completed their secondary school abroad can apply for the Department of Sociology after passing the Examination for Foreign or Overseas Students (İÜYÖS). Our department also welcomes international students who get a scholarship from the Republic of Turkey Ministry of Culture and Tourism Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities. According to the conditions announced by Istanbul University, students from other universities can apply for an internal transfer program.

Admission Requirements to Graduate Programs for International Students

Graduate programs of our department provide quotas for international students as well. The Institute of Social Sciences announces the conditions, and the committee makes the decisions in the Institute. International students are supposed to submit a Turkish language proficiency certificate at a minimum of C1 level. In addition, the thesis must be written in Turkish.

Brief Information of our Department

The history of department of Philosophy of Istanbul University goes back to Darülfünun, which the first university of the Ottoman Empire in the Western tradition. About 1910 as an independent department Philosophy branch was founded at Darülfünun. Due to 1933 University Reform old institution was closed and after that a new department, was established by Hans Reichenbach who was the one of the famous philosophers of the day.

Brief Information of our Department

Department of Turkish Language and Literature is one of the oldest departments of the Faculty of Letters. The Faculty of Letters has separated into four departments as Literature, History, Philosophy and Geography after the First World War. Department of Literature had also included the histories of both Eastern and Western literatures. By the Reformation of University in 1933, the units of language included by the Literature department were organized as independent departments. Department of Turkish Language and Literature was founded at this date. The head of department was Prof. Dr. Mehmet Fuat Köprülü. Looking into the phases our language and literature proceeded from beginning until today, the senses of art in these phases, the works created in this context, the creators of these works as a whole and transferring them to the young brains are among the goals of our department. In this context, the Department of Turkish Language and Literature continues transferring its knowledge and cultural eruditions to the intellectuals, leaders, academicians of today and tomorrow and keeps being an important touchstone on the development and improvement of the society. We will be happy to see you under this blessed roof as the Department of Turkish Language and Literature.

For those who are not graduates of the Turkish Language and Literature Undergraduate Program and do not meet the required conditions, a Scientific Preparatory Class is taught.

Exchange Programs

In the 2003/2004 academic year, he participated in the Erasmus program of Istanbul University with a pilot project and has been successfully maintaining student and faculty exchange mobility since the 2004/2005 academic year. Istanbul University Erasmus Program is run by the International Academic Relations Committee of our university.
Within the scope of the Erasmus + Exchange Program, Istanbul University Faculty of Letters aims to increase its knowledge and add a rich vision to students, academic staff and educators by offering this opportunity for change. With this exchange program, our faculty aims to turn students studying at universities abroad into researchers who closely follow the latest developments in their disciplines and focus on improving their knowledge in their field. It is possible for prospective students to continue their education in another European country for at least three months in the program where the condition of completing their first year in the educational institutions they are affiliated with is required. Faculty members are also required to teach at least five hours in contracted educational institutions, where they can be found as visiting lecturers.
History Founded in 1453-he Sahni Seman, madrasa is Turkey's oldest and most established educational institutions is based on Istanbul University. Also, according to data obtained from 2007 and 2008, the entrance to Turkey, "the world's best 500 universities" ranking is one of the six universities. Istanbul University, which was named after the law of 31 May 1933, started its activities on 1 August 1933 with the implementation of this law. On the other hand, Istanbul University Faculty of Letters is one of the most important literary faculties. With its deep-rooted history, it has a very wide range in terms of the branches of science offered by our country with 39 diploma programs and 21 main departments. TUDED is an open access, peer-reviewed, scholarly and international journal published two times a year in June and December. It has been an official publication of Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Turkish Language and Literature. The journal has been published since 1946. The manuscripts submitted for publication in the journal must be scientific and original work in Turkey Turkish or English.
Journal of Turkish Language and Literature: Türk Dili ve Edebiyatı Dergisi (TUDED) publishes research articles on Turkish language, literature and culture, contributing to the field. The target group of the journal consists of academicians, researchers, professionals, students, related professional and academic bodies and institutions.

Turkish Language and Literature Department in general; educates academicians, teachers and researchers. Brief Information of our Department

The Department of Modern Turkic Languages and Literatures was established in 2009. Our department, which started its education with 41 students for the first time in 2011, had its first graduates in 2015. The main mission of our department is to teach the dialects, literatures and cultures of the Turks spread over a wide area, especially in Central Asia; To cooperate with parallel institutions of the Turkish world in the fields of education and culture; to produce scientific, literary and intellectual works; to train competent scientists and educators who aim to serve their nation.

Brief Information Regarding the Scientific Works and Research Activities of our Department

Purposes:
1. Teaching 20 Turkish written languages, literatures and cultures that exist in a wide geographical area.
2. Ensuring mutual assistance by establishing communication between these areas.
3. It is aimed to produce works and to train necessary scientists to work in these fields.

Goals:
1. To carry out educational activities in the field of Modern Turkic Languages and Literatures.
2. To conduct researches and joint scientific studies in the field of Modern Turkic Languages and Literatures.
3. To conduct joint studies with scientists who are interested in Modern Turkic Languages in foreign countries, especially in Turkic Republics.

How to apply Double Major and Minor Programs?

Double Major, Minor and Joint Diploma: For students who want to transfer from higher education institutions in Turkey or abroad to Istanbul University, Transition Between Associate Degree and Undergraduate Degree Programs in Higher Education Institutions, Double Major, Minor and Inter-Institutional Credit Transfer. The relevant regulations and the principles and conditions determined by the University Senate are applied.
In Faculty Programs for Double Major and Minor Programs: We have double major and minor program agreements with the departments of Linguistics, History and Turkish Language and Literature.

Features that Distinguishes Our Department from Equivalent Departments

The languages, literatures and cultures of the Turks, spread over a wide geography, especially in Turkestan, are generally taught by native speakers. Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Uzbek, and Uyghur, as well as Mongolian and Russian, are taught by native speakers.

Business areas that our graduates can work and be involve

Students who graduate from the department gain the title of Turcologist. Our graduates; They can work as Turkish and literature teachers in public or private primary schools and high schools affiliated to the Ministry of National Education, and they can work in the same branches in private teaching institutions. On the other hand, they can work as assistant experts in various public institutions such as the Turkish Language Institution, Yunus Emre Institute, Turks Abroad and Related Communities, which are affiliated to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. In addition, they can take part in other written and visual media organs, especially TRT-Avaz. It is also possible to work in companies dealing with trade in Central Asia and the Caucasus.

Admission Requirements to Undergraduate Programs for International Students

For students who want to transfer from higher education institutions in foreign countries to Istanbul University, the Regulation on the Principles of Transfer between Associate and Undergraduate Degree Programs, Double Major, Minor and Inter-Institutional Credit Transfer and the principles and conditions determined by the University Senate are applied.
